The SR-71 is the fastest manned jet ever built. Blackbird is its nickname. Based on that concept we designed this board to cover ground quickly! Developed for the bigger days chasing down peaks in open waters and battling currents, it is the perfect wave-hawking weapon. It features added volume, an area-forward outline, lower entry rocker and a light vee in the nose, allowing it to paddle into anything, even in the toughest of surf conditions. With a slight single- to double-concave bottom running through the fins and rounded pintail, the Blackbird delivers smooth transitions and fast, clean lines. A heavy hitter for any arsenal!

Surfed the Blackbird in overhead surf and it did exactly what I hoped it would do. It is easy to paddle into the bigger waves, it handles the steep drops and by putting pressure on the back foot the tail locks immediately and helps to draw a nice high line.
This shape is the best. I added a bit of width to my custom 6'6 to add a little range for smaller surf. I wanted this board for 4-8' surf and so far it seems perfect. I haven't had a clean overhead day on it yet but I'm very happy with the way it feels in the chest to head high range. The added width seems to have loosened it up a little in the smaller stuff but the rails are foiled very nicely so it still holds in when its pumping. On top of that this board paddles like a dream, absolutely flies. Seems to have dimpled up a little fast for a heavy glass job though. Still I'll probably pick up a stock 6'8 when winter comes around.
I got a 6'8 custom shaped for my weight last fall. I've been surfing Santa Cruz both east and west side last winter on double overhead plus swells. I can sit way outside the pack and pick what ever I want. Very easy to catch waves with lots of control which translates to a confident ride. I prefer a thruster set up. When the waves are in 10' range the board seems a little stiff (smaller fins fixes this). I surfed my regular spot on the east side last winter on a 2' plus tide with a 13' wnw swell at 16 seconds. This board came alive!
Super fast and loose (Jordy model fins) it just wanted to run. I highly recommend having one in the quiver.
Word of advice; for the lighter surfer the stock dim's carry too much rail. Go custom you won't be disappointed.
Ordered a straight up 7-0 for a trip to Fiji. I didn't fuss with any dimensions; just went with the standard. The R. team turned the board around before the requested date and I really also appreciated their personal impute. There wasn't enough swell here before I left to give it a test ride, so I ended up paddling out at solid OH+ Namotu Left for the first ride. The board did exactly what it was meant to do. It felt really solid right off the first turn; very predictable, really fast carver. I felt like I had it immediately dialed in. It also proved to be a really good paddler. If you've ever surfed here or Indo with swell you know how important that is; there's a lot of water moving around. Some of the go outs were 2 hours of constant paddling to stay in the line up and then positioning and stroking into steep hollow take-offs. Most of us need enough board to manage that and still be able to duck dive it. What was maybe even more surprising was how well it did in smaller head high surf. The "Blackbird" did it all. I would rate this as one of the finest boards I've ever ordered (and I own a couple custom Lopez's; sorry Gerry). This will be in my travel bag for many trips to come!
