Torsion Spring Smoothie

Warranty Information

The Piranha was one of our most popular designs. It was primarily built for small surf, but it ended up being a very versatile board. We have re-tooled this design with a clean, full, round pin, and are calling it the Smoothie. It has a timeless outline designed to accommodate a wide range of conditions.

The bottom starts with a slight roll in the nose transitioning to a light single through the center. This shallow single blends into a sunken double concave in front of the fins and an elevated double concave between the fins that finally ends in a double barrel vee of the tail. If you can’t appreciate the tech talk, just know that the board surfs fast & smooth.

  1. Really upped my wave count

I asked the folks at Rusty for a custom 6‘4 with lots of volume, which landed me at 44L. I got the board for Oahu‘s south shore and the softer breaks on the North Shore, waves up to head high faces, but crumbly and definitely not barreling. You fully compete with longboarders and mid lengths here all the time, no exceptions, but I really dislike riding longboards, so here I am. The oversized Smoothie (I weigh 155 pounds...) does the job perfectly. You‘re clearly not going to get in as early as a competent longboarder on a 10-foot log, but I can still sit considerably further out than the shortboard kids, and the Smoothie does turn, just not radically. Started out as a quad setup, now riding it as a twin-plus-trailer, and having tons of fun. As for the construction, the deck does get dented, but nothing compared to a PU. Overall, excellent choice, excellent product, and excellent service by the team at Rusty.

  2. Best Board Ever?

This is the most fun and versatile board I have ever ridden. Small and mushy to big and steep, it handles it all and is usually the most fun option out of my 8 board quiver. The Torsion Spring tech makes this board next level sweet. So responsive in and out of turns. I have ridden mine over 50 times and the deck looks just about pristine. I always thought I was pretty tough on boards but maybe I just never had a board built to last like this one.

  3. Torsion stoke

The surf has been small and mostly closed out up here until today when there was finally some shape to allow me to finally ride a bunch of waves on the Smoothie. You've probably heard similar things but....so far I'm real happy with the Torsion set up. I never minded the eps chatter over the years because the increased responsiveness made it ok. The Torsion is just as responsive without the chatter. It seems to translate into more speed and more positive feeling turns compared to my eps smoothie (and I really like the eps smoothie). I'm looking forward to a bit more swell so I can ride the new slayer!
